Kate's Story

Kate’s Story.

On Wednesday April 13th, Kate decided to grace us with her presence. It all started around 10:30 that morning when I was scheduled for my 38 week exam. Papi was in town and came to the appointment with me. I saw Dr W after a long hour wait (she had a delivery) and she decided to go ahead and strip my membranes again.
The week prior to that Dr W attempted to do this but it did not seem to work. We really didn’t want to have an 8 lb or more baby and I was measuring pretty big at the time so that decision was made at 37 weeks. We all waited in anticipation for my water to break. We even stuck around downtown just in case we needed to drive back to the hospital.
Nothing, not even that weekend did Kate want to arrive. We waited and waited and fast forward to week 38 with Papi. Dr W went ahead and did what she had to do. I didn’t know at the time but I started to feel some leaking at the doctors office. I didn’t think anything of it and went about my day. Papi and I went and had some lunch, we went to the social security office, we also went to HEB. After walking along the grocery aisles, I started to feel even more leaking. I went to the restroom and thought maybe it was just my bladder. (note: my water never broke with Allison so I didn’t know what to expect). I called my doctors office spoke to the nurse who immediately told me to get down there and check into the hospital.  No one wanted me to drive and Papi hadn’t driven a car in over a year so we decided Grandma would take me and Jake would meet me down there. There weren’t any painful contractions on the ride down thank goodness.

We finally made it and Jake and I went to labor and delivery. The nurse began to check to make sure what was leaking was actually amniotic fluid and yes it was! She told us we would be having a baby within 5 hours. At the time it was only 5 PM. I really didn’t think it would happen so soon.  We sat and waited and waited. I was dilated about 5 cm and 85% effaced. The nurse left and said she would be back around 8. We watched Jake’s favorite show, American Idol and waited. Slowly I was feeling more contractions but I was seemingly tolerating the pain. Around 9 the nurse called the doctor who decided it would be best to progress the labor and quickly started me on pitocin. The contractions grew more intense and I finally ponied up and asked for the epidural around 10pm. Immediately I felt a warmth inside that wouldn’t escape. To put it into words for someone who has never had an epidural before could understand, it was as if you were laying out on the beach basking under the warm hot sun and on the best happy pills you could ever be on. It was beautiful. My hip and back pains miraculously went away.
Around 11, the doctor was called to get her butt down to the hospital. We found out Dr W would not deliver the baby but another doctor who was on call for her would. We waited and waited and thought for a moment there would never be a doctor. I had a baby’s head stuck between my legs wanting to come out and there wasn’t a doctor there to assist in the pushing. The nurse said if she didn’t show up some other random doctor would come in to deliver the baby but thank goodness she finally showed up around 11:40. We began pushing and out comes Miss Kate Elizabeth at 11:54PM perfect as can be.
